Mechanisms for QoS-Aware Cloud Infrastructures

Andrey Brito (Universidade Federal de Campina Grande)

Cloud platforms are currently the default hosting environment for a large variety of applications, from big data processing to web applications. Nevertheless, in all those cases, the resource needs of the applications may vary. If this, often intrinsic, load variation is coupled with some quality of service requirements, special mechanisms must be used to properly adapt the cloud resources used. In this talk, we will discuss mechanism that enable a QoS-aware infrastructure. These mechanisms have been investigated in the EU-Brazil BIGSEA project and include monitoring approaches for applications and infrastructures that make it possible to detect potential issues, and actuation approaches to adapt the infrastructure, including vertical and horizontal scaling approaches. We will not only discuss existing approaches to address the problem, but also challenges and limitations of existing solutions, which can reveal potential research directions.

Speaker Bio

Andrey Brito is a Professor at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG, Brazil) in the Computer Science Department. He has a doctorate in Computer Science (2010) from the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Computer Science from UFCG, and B.E. in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), Brazil. Andrey’s main interests are trustworthiness and scalability aspects of distributed systems, especially in cloud computing environments. Andrey coordinates teams that have been researching cloud computing and directly contributing to OpenStack, the most used open-source middleware for cloud computing. Besides collaboration with industrial partners in developing cloud computing technologies, Andrey is the Brazilian coordinator of the EU-BRA SecureCloud project, participates in the technical staff of the EU-BRA BigSea project and is a member of the advisory board of the EU-BRA CloudForum project.
